Why clean mattresses?

There is two main reasons to clean your Mattress:

  1. The Mattress has become a bit smelly from perspiration during hot humid nights or the children have had a little accident. This just requires a standard anti bacterial clean and deodorizing.
  2. You suffer from Dust Mite Allergy.

For a smelly or dirty Mattress. It would just requires a pre-clean with a natural cleaner followed by some deodorisers and sanitising agents. Depending on the type of smell, two or three treatments may be needed, followed by a final clean.

Dust mites are microscopic, eight-legged arachnids (not insects) 0.3mm in length. They are invisible to the human eye, so small they can crawl through the weave of bedding fabrics. Dust mites feed on tiny flakes of shed human skin cells. The average adult sheds about 1 kilogram of skin per year. This will feed millions of dust mites. Now the waste fecal mater (poo) from all those dust mites can cause some very bad reactions in some people. The fecal mater is lighter than air and becomes airborne when disturbed by activity like fluffing pillows and tossing and turning during the night. The airborne particles are inhaled the protein in the poo breaks down the protective mucous lining of the eyes, nose, lungs and skin and cause an overreaction of the human immune system.

To effectively control dust mite allergens, the mattress should be regularly cleaned, about every 6 months for allergy sufferers and once a year or so for people that do not have allergy problems. The mattress is first vacuumed with the truck mount so the allergens are vented outside, then a dust mite-neutralizing cleaning product is sprayed on the surface and then I wet-clean the top and sides of the mattress with a low-moisture upholstery tool. Only the top and all sides are cleaned so there is good air flow through the mattress. All the products are non-allergenic. This will control the mite allergens between regular clearings. At this point the carpets in the bedroom should also be cleaned if you suffer from allergies.

The Mattress will take about 12 hours to fully dry in most cases.
